PHOA209: W1A1: Feedback

Welcome
to the class! I'm looking forward to working with you this term! Below
you will read my feedback for your W1A1; both via the written word and
“group video” feedback. Please note that this feedback below covers ONE
out of the TWO categories seen within the rubric.
To watch the group video, please refer to the video above this post (at the bottom of the assignment) This video not only discusses W1A1 but also gives an overview of the course.
RE: CREATED AN ARTICULATE & RELEVANT STATEMENT & UPDATED RESUME:
Statement & Resume: All
students have been asked to edit his/her statement and resumes based
off of the information read in the “Questions for the Professor” section
and submit for W3A1. Further details can be found in the group video critique above.
You have a lot of great information in both your statement and your resume. There are a few different ways to write an artist statement and resume, although for PHOA209 - we'll be following a template. I've made a few notes on your statement and resume and have re-attached these files to consider for W3A1. In terms of your resume, you want to make sure it is written in the MLA format and for the statement, ensure that you focus on the four topics noted in the Week 1 module under "Portfolio; Resume; and Statement"

RE: SHARED PHOTOGRAPHIC CAREER GOALS IN MLA FORMAT (AUTOBIO):
Your
autobiography covered all of the topics noted within the assignment and
was well written in terms of grammar, sentence structure &
punctuation.
Moving forward all
students are encouraged to consider his/her “writing skills” in terms
of grading. If you have not had a chance to do so already, please be
sure to read the post within our “Course Home” section titled,
“Guidelines for Class”, and see the PDF within it and refer to the
section on “Proper Writing Skills = An Expectation”.
RE: POSTED PHOTOGRAPH OF THEMSELVES WITH PROGRAM REQUIRED EQUIPMENT CLEARLY SHOWING (GEAR NOTED IN REQUIRED EQUIPMENT LIST):
IMAGES
– You submitted image(s) properly showing most of the gear noted in the
Required Items List. There were a few items that I was not able to find
in the images; please see the re-attached file and submit new photos of
missing items within 48 hours.
RE: CREATED A CURRENT VERSION OF THE PORTFOLIO AS A PDF THAT REPRESENTS YOUR BEST WORK TO DATE IN YOUR PROGRAM OF STUDY ACCORDING TO THE PORTFOLIO STANDARDS.
You
uploaded a PDF to clearly show your current portfolio and focused on
one genre of photography. As noted in the group video critique, I've
crossed out a number of images on everyone's portfolio. By narrowing
down the images to roughly half will give you a clear "jumping off
point" in terms of what you can focus on moving forward for the next 10
weeks.
Many of your images focused on the urban landscape; some had more of a focus on architecture. I would encourage you to "steer" your portfolio more specifically towards architecture. This sub-genre is certainly marketable, is considered "commercial" (which fits the standards of AIPOD's Associate's Program), and it will be possible for you to use your 3 strobe lights for this sub-genre (which is a requirement for passing the portfolio).
"Urban landscape" - although interesting - teeters on the edge of "fine art photography", which is not focused on at our school.
Further details are noted in the group video critique where improvements can be made during this class.

Below are two different photographers I'm encouraging all students you
to check out. When you look at these two websites, take note of the
photographer's different portfolios; take note of the photographer's
different styles of editing and different style of branding. The term "branding" is one we'll be discussing a lot in this class.Information regarding your peer responses will be left in the gradebook; please be sure to post all of your peer responses by the given due dates as these are only accepted in “real time”; late peer responses posts will not receive credit. If you have not had a chance to do so already, please be sure to read the post within our “Course Home” section titled, “Posing Guidelines for Class Participation (Peer Responses)” for more details.
