Assignment 1: Course Final Project—Portfolio
Assignment Overview
You will finalize your
portfolio, written statement, résumé, web portfolio and postcard. You
will also document the completion of your print portfolio.
Assignment Description
For this assignment, you
will finalize and submit all the components of your final project. This
assignment will represent your last opportunity to make changes to each
of the final project components before submitting them for this
assignment. You will also document each of the completed pages of your
print portfolio.
Associate degree and Certificate Final Portfolio Standards
The
final portfolio must demonstrate the skills that are the key components
of your program of study, demonstrate your personal brand and style,
and be targeted towards a specific market audience, whether this be a
future employer or potential client.
In order to demonstrate acquired skills, the content of the portfolio must:
- Prove technical ability that meets industry standards (lighting, exposure, depth of field)
- Images demonstrate the ability to convey a concept beyond image content through the use of appropriate techniques (the image should tell a story of sorts; the viewer should be able to tell the "meaning" behind the image)
- All photographs must reflect an individual voice and be directed towards a market audience (Consider who you want to sell your work to)
- Cohesive theme within a genre with appropriate variety and depth of exploration
(Ensure that there is a sense of diversity in your protfolio in terms
of male vs. female models, different models, different products,
locations, etc.)
- Demonstrate command of shaping light using a minimum of three strobes (2-3 images in the portfolio should clearly show the use of 3 strobe lights)
- Must show command of working with the human form in at least three images
- Quantity of images – 15 – 20 minimum (includes website and print; the same images that you print should be the same images on your website)
- Professional quality 11 x 14 inch prints (minimum) (This refers to your print images only!
The images that you submit to your website will remain the standard 3:2
aspect ratio. The images you print however, will have to be cropped to
a different aspect ratio so you can print an 11x14.)
A
print portfolio of archival quality prints presented in a professional
quality portfolio binder in addition to supplemental materials:
- Resume
- Website
- Postcard design
Note:
Access to the original RAW files contained in the portfolio and ability
to post them to the classroom if requested by the instructor
Assignment Step-by-Step Instructions
- Printing:
Your
printing process should be near complete. So conclude it by printing
any remaining images. If you are printing at a professional lab, you may
choose to send more. Make sure that you are considering the turnaround time with respect to this assignment's due date.
Keep the following points in mind:
- If
you are printing at a professional lab, make sure that you find out
what its specifications are on color space, resolution, and file
requirements. If you have any questions or are unsure about anything it
is often a good idea to contact the lab via phone or e-mail.
- If
you are printing your images via your personal printer, you will want
to make sure that you consider color, space, resolution, and file
requirements with regard to your own printer. You will also want to make
sure of the paper type and paper profiles. Also, you will need to
ensure that you remember to do some test printing before sending all
images to print.
- You
will want to consider the size of the paper, the placement of the
images, and layout, including any possible text that you might include.

Prepare and finalize each of your project components as indicated below:
- Résumé: Export the final draft of your résumé as a PDF document titled PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_résumé.pdf.
- Statement: Save the final draft of your statement as an Adobe PDF document titled PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_statement.pdf.
5. Create Assessment Portfolio:
- Create
a full page PDF slideshow of your final portfolio images. Include your
cover page, back cover page, and category pages (15-20 images). Name
this file PHOA209_W11_A1_Assessment_lastname_firstinitial_portfolio.pdf
6. Complete Web Portfolio:
- Update
your web portfolio with your final sequence of portfolio images and
update the Profile section of your web portfolio site to reflect any
changes you made to your statement and résumé. Post your Behance web
portfolio link in the discussion thread and complete the following
screenshots:
- Project page (landing page)
- Profile page
- Each of the portfolio pages (15–20 images)
- Combine all of your screenshots into a single PDF file titled PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_portfolio.pdf.
- Complete Your Print Portfolio
Insert
your images in your portfolio binder and photograph your completed
print portfolio binder from front to back documenting each print on each
page. If you have prints on facing pages, document your portfolio as
spreads. Be sure you have adequate light, and avoid serious issues with
reflections. Please review the tutorial above for specific instructions
and tips in completing this step. This component will document the
completion of your print portfolio. Assure you have proper white
balance, exposure, contrast and background. The quality of your prints
will be heavily scrutinized for quality and points will be awarded based
on the images you took to document them, so assure they are up to
professional standards.
- Import
the photographs of your printed portfolio binder into Adobe Lightroom
and create a slideshow for these images. Be sure to maximize the image
size and do not include any caption or title information. Export the
slideshow as a PDF document titled PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_printportfolio.pdf (Quality: 85%, Custom Size: 1200x800 pixels).
8. Complete Promotional Postcard:
o Review feedback you received on your promotional postcard from W9: Assignment 2 and make any necessary adjustments to create a well-designed postcard.
- Save the front and back of your postcard as a PDF titled: PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_postcard.pdf
- Combine the following components into a single folder:
- PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_résumé.pdf
- PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_statement.pdf
- PHOA209_W11_A1_Assessment_lastname_firstinitial_portfolio.pdf
- PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_portfolio.pdf
- PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_printportfolio.pdf
- PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_postcard.pdf
- Compress these files into a single zip folder titled PHOA209_W11_A1_lastname_firstinitial_finalproject.zip.
