Assignment Overview
All students are encouraged to review the post in the Week 10 Problems and Solutions section titled "Prints & Portfolio - Plan and Prepare NOW"
before proceeding with this assignment. There's a helpful video
tutorial within that post to help prepare for this assignment.
For this assignment, you will print the photos of your final
portfolio so that your total of prints comes to 15–20 images. You will
print these images using your own professional printer, or you could
print them at a professional lab.
Students who choose to print his/her photos from a professional lab are encouraged to use one of the following:

Note: At this point, you may think that
you know all of the 20 images that you would like to print for your
final. Keep the feedback that you've received in mind when ordering
your images. To ensure that you are only ordering the images that you
know you will need, narrow down your top choices thus far to 8 or 10.
Please be open to the fact that your print decisions may change as we
move forward.
Assignment Description
You will be printing the
remaining images for your final portfolio. You may print your images at a
professional lab or you may choose to print from your own professional
printer. In both cases, it is important to consider the turnaround time
for printing. Find out how long your lab requires to not only print but
also get those prints to you for this assignment. If you are printing on
your own, you will need to consider how long the entire process will
take, if your printer prints the correct size and the cost of ink and
paper. In both cases, you will make photographs that document the
successful creation of your prints.
Assignment Step-by-Step Instructions
- Select the images that
need to be printed (or reprinted) to complete your final portfolio. If
you are printing at a professional lab, you may choose to order more
than you will need in the portfolio. Make sure that you are considering the turnaround time with respect to this assignment's due date. If you order your prints, you must have them in hand in order to submit this assignment for credit.
Keep the following points in mind:
- Your
prints should be as large as possible on an 11"x14" page. Consider how a
margin or lack of margin will affect how your prints are viewed.
- If
you are printing at a professional lab, make sure that you find out
what its specifications are about color, space, resolution, and file
requirements. If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, it
is often a good idea to contact the lab via phone or e-mail.
- If
you are printing your own images via your personal printer, you will
want to make sure that you are considering color, space, resolution, and
file requirements with regards to your own printer. You will also want
to make sure of the paper type and paper profiles. Also, you need to
ensure that you remember to do some test printing before sending all
images to print.
- You
need to consider the size of the paper, the placement of the images,
and layout, including any possible text that you might include.
- Document your prints. To do this:
- Take
a screenshot showing your order form to the professional lab as well as
any relevant screenshots showing the ordering process. Alternatively,
if you are printing your own images, take a screenshot of your printer
queue.
- Take
several photographs that clearly indicate the prints that you have
taken. Be sure that you use even illumination and avoid distracting
reflections. Ensure that the edges of your prints are visible. Assure
you have proper white balance. The quality of your prints will be
heavily scrutinized for quality and points will be awarded based on the
images you took to document them, so assure they are up to professional
standards. Do not use a scanner. Do not photograph your prints within
the portfolio sleeves.
- Save your image screenshots and documentation from Step 2 into a single PDF document titled PHOA209_W10_A2_lastname_firstinitial_prints.pdf.
- Submit this PDF document to the Discussion Area by Week 10, Day 7.
- By Week 11, Day 1.
review and comment on the posts of at least two of your peers. When
critiquing your peers' work, remember to give at least two suggestions
on how they might improve their work. In addition, point out the aspects
of their work that were the most successful.
