Assignment 1: Exhibition Entry (Final Project)
Greetings Photographers,
We can now see the light at the end of the tunnel! You will now prepare your final exhibition entry for our group exhibition, appropriately titled The Power of Light. You will assemble the best work that you have shot throughout these last five weeks, carefully considering the feedback that you have been given!
It has been a pleasure working with you! Now on to the show! Tonight, all shall be revealed and we will be able to look at the photographs that you have worked so hard to create!

Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you will create your final exhibition entry AKA the final project! You will be submitting your top 10 images that you have shot during this course. Your entry should clearly display a strong understanding of the feedback you received for both W5A1 and W5A2. You will also be re-writing (or editing) your 100-word Exhibition Statement.

Assignment Description
Prior to choosing your top 10 images, consider all the different subjects and subject matter that you have photographed throughout this course. We know that in order to create a strong portfolio, it is best that you choose images that display diversity of subject matter and light. This way, your viewer can see that you have a lot of experience photographing different genres and working under different lighting scenarios. You are required to submit at least 5 out of the 10 images that not only incorporate artificial lighting but images that clearly showed that you mastered the lighting technique.
Consider the feedback that you received from your instructor throughout the course in terms of selecting top images. You may use multiple images from each assignment. You should select your best images and do not need to represent all the assignments.
Consider the feedback that you received from your instructor in terms of post-processing. How will this feedback affect the images that you would like to include in your mock group exhibition?
Post-processing (editing) is allowed for this assignment. However, you are required to limit your editing to: highlight and shadow recovery, exposure modification, color temperature correction/modification, overall sharpening. You may crop your photographs for this assignment; be sure to keep your photographs set to the 3:2 aspect ratio.
Step-by-Step Instructions
(Choosing and Editing Top 10 Images)
- Select your top 10 images based off past feedback and the following:
- Subject Matter
- Ensure that the images you are choosing display different subjects (both human and inanimate objects/architecture; ensure portfolio shows either 50% human subjects and 50% inanimate objects/architecture; or 50/60)
- A good place to start to ensure diversity is choosing top images from each assignment.
- Refer back to the suggested top images noted to you throughout the course.
- Lighting
- Ensure that the images you are choosing display a diverse sense of light: hard, soft, 8:1 ratio, 1:1 ratio, key and fill light.
- Composition
- Ideally, your mock entry will show a diverse sense of composition: centering your subject, positioning your subject on the right or the left side of the frame, different focal lengths, different points of view.
- Conduct any necessary post-processing techniques to your RAW files.
- Your editing should be limited to: highlight and shadow recovery, exposure modification, color temperature correction/modification, overall sharpening. (Refer back to the suggested edits noted to you throughout the course.)
- You may crop your photographs for this assignment. (maintain the 3:2 aspect ratio with all crops)
- Adjust the image size of all of your top photographs to be set to 300ppi.
- Consider the order in which you want your images to appear.
- Do you want to place your images taken within a studio together? Or would you like to alter back and forth between images taken in the studio or outside of the studio?
- Consider how you arrange your images in terms of subject matter. Would you prefer to place your images taken of the human subject together or disperse these evenly throughout images of inanimate objects?
- Consider how you will arrange your images in terms of lighting. Would you prefer to group your images by artificial and natural/existing light? Or would you prefer to disperse these evenly throughout the mock-up entry?
- Create a Cover Page to include as the first page of your Slideshow for the final. You can do this buy creating a new document in Photoshop or you can use a similar program. Your cover page should include the following:
- The title of your show
- Your first and last name
- The name of your freelance photo business
- The start of a logo for your freelance photo business
- You're encouraged to use the following two websites as inspiration for creating a logo. Keep in mind: this logo that you develop does not have to be the "final logo" you'll use for the rest of your career. This is merely to help you start developing one that you'll perfect later down the line:

- Save the 10 images as JPEG files and label as:
- "PHOA113_W6A1_LastName_FirstInitial_01.jpg"
- "PHOA113_W6A1_LastName_FirstInitial_02.jpg"
- "PHOA113_W6A1_LastName_FirstInitial_03.jpg"
- Continue with labeling format for all 10 images.
- Write an exhibit statement according to Week 5's lecture in a Word Document. Your statement should be 300 words in length and address the topic of the show proposal "The Power of Light". Explain how your images illustrate the communicative power of the quality of light. Be sure to include the title of your mock entry.
- Import the statement and the images into an Adobe Lightroom Slideshow; locating the text and images in the placeholders provided in the layout.
- Ensure that images are not distorted by the layout and that all edges are visible
- Refer to the post in the Questions for the Professor section titled "How to Create a Lightroom Slideshow" for details.
- Export your document in PDF format as "PHOA113_W6A1_LastName_FirstInitial_ExhibitProposal.pdf"
- In the Discussion Area, write a 200-word essay discussing your work (separate from your exhibition statement). Write about the technical decisions you made (metering, exposure, white balance, etc.) as well as the creative decisions you made (light, subject matter, composition). Be sure to also write about your plans to add or remove images for the final project.
Deliverable Specifications: due by Week 6, Day 3
- Exhibit Proposal created with InDesign template and exported in PDF format
- Includes 10 images that represent the best work of the student.
- Images are sequenced for smooth visual flow
- Cover image is placed correctly
- Post-production has been applied
- 300ppi resolution
- 300-word essay on the communicative power of unique qualities of light included
Assumptions:
- Follows MLA writing guidelines for style, spelling, grammar, and citation of sources
Exclusions:
- Watermarks: Do not watermark your images.
Write a 100-word critique to 2 of your classmates and discuss their technical and creative decisions by Week 6, Day 3. Your post should be encouraging, ask questions, and/or challenge a topic.
NOTE: Your assignment is due the last day of Week 6, which is the last day of class. Please plan in advance to ensure that your assignment is not submitted after this date. Late assignments will not be accepted.
NOTE: Your assignment and peer responses are due on the same day. This is to ensure that all students can use the "half" weekend to complete this assignment. In the event that you are the first two students to submit your work, please be prepared to "check back" into the classroom for other assignments to leave feedback for.
