Assignment 1: The Power of Light
Greetings Photographers,
It is time to begin the final preparations for your up and
coming group exhibition, "The Power of Light"! So far we have focused
on how light wraps around objects and reflects off a surface, but in
order to create a dramatic image that is clearly about light as an
exhibit cover image, I would like you to focus on transmitted light,
that is, to photograph a light source itself in order to express the
power of light.

Assignment Overview
In
this assignment, you will be submitting your top 10 images that you
shot during this course. You will also be writing a 100-word Exhibition
Statement. This preparation is meant to better prepare you for your
next shooting assignment, W5A2 and essentially, your final project, W6A1.

Assignment Description
Prior to choosing your top 10 images, consider all the different subjects and subject matter that you have photographed throughout this course.
In order to create a strong portfolio, it is best that you choose images that display diversity of subject matter and light. This
way, your viewer can see that you have a lot of experience
photographing different genres and working under different lighting
scenarios.
You are required to submit at least 5
out of the 10 images that not only incorporate artificial lighting but
images that clearly showed that you mastered the lighting technique.
Consider
the feedback that you received from your instructor throughout the
course in terms of selecting top images. Consider the feedback that you
received from your instructor in terms of post-processing. How will
this feedback affect the images that you would like to include in your
mock group exhibition?
Post-processing
(editing) is allowed for this assignment. However, you are required to
limit your editing to: highlight and shadow recovery, exposure
modification, color temperature correction / modification, overall
sharpening.

Step-by-Step Instructions
(Choosing and Editing Top 10 Images)
- Select your top 10 images based off of the following:
- Subject Matter
- Ensure that the images you are choosing display different subjects (both human and inanimate)
- A good place to start to ensure diversity is choosing top images from each assignment.
- Lighting
- Ensure that the images you are choosing display a diverse sense of light: hard, soft, 8:1 ratio, 1:1 ratio, key and fill light.
- Composition
- Ideally,
your mock entry will show a diverse sense of composition: centering
your subject, positioning your subject on the right or the left side of
the frame, different focal lengths, different points of view.
- Conduct any necessary post-processing techniques to your RAW files.
- Your
editing should be limited to: highlight and shadow recovery, exposure
modification, color temperature correction/modification, overall
sharpening. (Think back to the suggested edits made to you by the professor throughout the course.)
- You may crop your photographs for this assignment (please be sure to maintain the 3:2 aspect ratio in past suggested edits).
- Adjust
the image size of the longest length of all of your top photographs to
be set to "10 inches" and the resolution to be set to 200ppi. Please see the example below for a horizontal image:
- Import
the statement and the 10 images into an Adobe Lightroom Slideshow;
locating the text and images in the placeholders provided in the layout.
- Ensure that images are not distorted by the layout and that all edges are visible
- Place your pre-determined cover image in the correct location in the layout
- Refer
to the post in the Week 5's "Problems and Solutions" section titled
"Adobe Lightroom Slideshow: How to Create" for details.
- Save your file name as "PHOA113_W5_A1_Lastname_Firstname_Slideshow.pdf"
- Write a 100 word "Exhibition Statement" & attach it as a Word Document to your post. Save the file as "PHOA113_W5_A1_Lastname_Firstname_Exhibition Statement.doc".
- Be sure to refer to the post within the W5A1 Discussion Thread titled, "W5A1 - Tips: Exhibition Statement".
- Write a 200-word essay discussing your work directly into the Discussion Area (do not attach as a Word document). Write about the technical decisions you made (how you chose your images, edits that you've made in post)
as well as the creative decisions you made (light, subject matter,
composition) and address how these images communicate the power of
light.
Deliverable Specifications: due by Week 5, Day 4
- Slideshow of top 10 images submitted as a PDF (created according to directions in Lightroom)
- 100-word Exhibition Statement (attached as a Word document)
- 200-word Essay in Discussion Area
Assumptions:
- Follows MLA writing guidelines for style, spelling, grammar, and citation of sources
Exclusions:
Write a 100-word critique to 2 of your classmates and discuss their technical and creative decisions by Week 5, Day 5. Your post should be encouraging, ask questions, and/or challenge a topic.
