Below you will find my feedback for your W3A1 in the form of “group video feedback”. To view your group video feedback, please scroll up.  It’s been posted in the body of the assignment; just below the rubric. Information regarding your Peer Critiques and top images will be listed within the Grade book.  
  • RE: CREATED 40 NEW PHOTOGRAPHS OF A MALE AND A FEMALE SUBJECT; 20 FRAMES TAKEN OF EACH SUBJECT, INCLUDING 10 EACH UNDER SOFT LIGHT USING A 2:1 LIGHTING RATIO & 10 EACH TAKEN OF EACH USING HARD LIGHT & AN 8:1 LIGHTING RATIO USING STUDIO LIGHT(S), REFLECTOR AND/OR WHITE FOAM BOARD PLUS IMAGES DOCUMENTING USE OF HANDHELD LIGHT METER & WIDE-ANGLE SHOTS OF LIGHTING SCHEMES; USES EFFECTIVE TECHNICAL LIGHTING CHOICES, CORRECT EXPOSURE, WHITE BALANCE, AND FOCUS:
Student submitted the basics for the assignment: 40 new photos of both a male and a female model. Student included one out of two wide-angle images to show how lighting gear & accessories were arranged for soft light (1:2 light ratio); did not include a wide-angle image for hard light (1:8 light ratio). Student included an image showing use of a handheld light meter (although information was not legible); meter was used correctly for portraiture. White balance was handled well; images were in sharp focus.

Student is encouraged to bracket shots to avoid overexposed highlights and dark shadows; further details noted in the group video critique.


  • RE: CREATED NEW PHOTOGRAPHS THAT EXPLORE HOW DIFFUSE AND HARD LIGHT AND VARYING LIGHT RATIOS EXPRESS VARYING PERCEPTIONS OF GENDER: 
Images show a start towards understanding of how to create both hard and soft light; further details noted in the group video critique.  Although student is encouraged to bring the reflector in a lot closer to really "hone in" on the 1:2 light ratio for soft lighting or to use a second modeling light with a soft-box or shoot-through umbrella.
  • RE: SELECTED TOP 3 IMAGES BASED ON THEIR DEGREE OF TECHNICAL AND CREATIVE SUCCESSES IN EXPRESSING GENDER THROUGH THE CHARACTER OF LIGHT AND LIGHT RATIO:
Note: Details regarding which images to choose as "top shots" and how to edit are noted in the group video critique; further details regarding top images will also be noted in the gradebook.  You're encouraged to watch and re-watch the video as needed to ensure that you're prepared for your W6A1.
  • RE PROVIDED A THOUGHTFUL, (200-WORD) ESSAY DISCUSSION STUDENT’S TECHNICAL AND CREATIVE CHOICES THROUGHOUT THE SHOOT:
Student’s written statement was handled well; discussed both the technical and creative choices made throughout the shoot.  Statement met the 200-word mark.
