Assignment Overview
Shooting to a specific
layout is a common request most photographers will face. Being able to
visualize where the title block, supportive text, and how your subject
will fit within those parameters is a trait all photographers need to
possess. This ability allows you to frame, light, and pose your subject
in a way that supports the editorial story, product, or advertisement.
Assignment Description
In this assignment you will be using the
provided template and shooting for a specific predesigned layout. The
template can be downloaded here.
For your final shooting assignment you are required to find a
subject, determine a lighting solution, and find a location that will
work within the parameters of this template.
- Select a subject, determine a lighting solution, and find a location (indoor or outdoor) that will work within the parameters of the provided template.
- Model: New Model; Age Appropriate for your sub-genre
- Lighting Gear: Key light + Hair Light
- Light Ratio: 4:1 or 8:1 Light Ratio
- Light Style + Accessories: You will capture hard lighting and are asked to use a key and a hair light. You are encouraged to shoot with a reflective umbrella attached to your key light to help produce a hard light. Please use a grid on your strobe for a hair light to better direct the light.
- Images: 20
Photographs + wide-angle image clearly showing lighting scheme in
relation to where model was positioned + use of handheld light meter;
label "PH323_W6_A1_Lastname_FirstInitial_contact.PDF".
- Adjust
your focal length throughout the shot; push your composition; stylize
your shoot; consider what outfit or props you may need to "match" your
chosen location and the magazine layout; avoid distracting elements
behind your model that could pull the viewers eyes away from the model.
- Choose your top image and use that for your magazine layout.
- Flatten the .PSD file and save as a JPEG; Label as "PH323_W6A1_LastName_FirstInitial_magazine"
