Assignment 3: Final Project
Assignment Overview
Now that you have performed
the task of location scouting, conducted a series of test shots,
considered the time of day in which the shoot will be preformed, and
evaluated all subject wardrobe/prop considerations, it's time to see if
your preproduction paid off.
All of these tasks noted above
were completed with your W4A1. You will be shooting this assignment in
the same location (unless asked to choose a new location). You will be
shooting during the sunrise or sunset hours to capture the sun as a
"back light" - same as W4A1 - and you will be using a strobe or off
camera flash as a fill to produce a soft light. In short, you will model
this assignments technical requirements around W4A1 and the feedback
you received from that assignment
Assignment Description
Using your subject from W4A1, conduct a shoot in which the subject is in similar weather conditions as the test. (You'll be shooting this assignment after you've received feedback from W4A1; avoid shooting W4A1 and W4A3 on the same days.)
Depending on the feedback you received from W4A1, you may be
following the same lighting solution you have identified in W4A1. If you were asked to make adjustments to your lighting scheme in W4A1, they should be seen with this assignment. Contrast, brightness, and quality of light should all be harmonious with the emotion and concept.
If you were asked to choose a
different location, adjust your model's wardrobe, or make any other
adjustments in the feedback for W4A1, those adjustments should be
evident with this assignment.
Assignment Step-by-Step Instructions
- Photograph your subject in your chosen location; shoot 20 images. You may photograph the same subject you shot for W4A1 or you may choose to work with a different subject.
- Be
sure to keep in mind that one's height, shape, and size can slightly
alter your lighting scheme. For example, if your subject from W4A1 was a
5 year old child and your subject for W4A3 is an 18 year old - the
difference in height will play a part with your lighting scheme; you may
need to raise the lights or lower them depending
- Use your handheld light meter
to meter the light. Take a photograph of you using your handheld light
meter on your new subject. Include photograph in your contact sheet to
avoid loosing points.
- Take a wide-angle image of your lighting scheme.
Ensure that this image clearly shows the proper gear and where the sun
was positioned in relation to your new subject. Include photograph in
your contact sheet to avoid loosing points.
- Shoot both horizontal and vertical images; zoom in and out - adjust the focal length; shoot from different angles.
- Create
a contact sheet according to course standards; include your 20 images,
image of your handheld light meter in use on location, and a wide-angle
image of your lighting scheme. Label your contact sheet as such, "PH323_W4_A1_lastname_firstinitial_Contact.PDF"
- Select one final, marketable portrait of your subject.
Save your top image as a JPEG file and label it as such, "PH323_W4_A1_lastname_firstinitial_Top Image.jpg".
- Compose a 250-word
explanation depicting the photographic process and how this portrait
fits into your selected genre of portrait photography; write your essay directly into the discussion thread.
- By Week 4, Day 7, submit the production document and photograph to the Discussion Area in a file named PH323_W4_A3_lastname_firstinitial_production.doc.
- By Week 5, Day 1, comment and respond to at least two of your peers' portraits.
