Assignment Overview
This week's final project requires you to
refine your ability to produce an emotionally influenced portrait of a
subject for commerce. Considering the first shoot you performed in the
beginning of the week, think of the emotions that worked best for your
subject. Which emotions were easily depicted? Which did not transcend
the lens?
Assignment Description
Begin by selecting a different (and new) subject (5 years of age or older)
than you used earlier in the week. In this assignment you will have
full control over your lighting selection. However, your lighting
selection must be clearly justified with a photographic statement that
documents the process and approach you are following for this shoot.
Assignment Step-by-Step Instructions
- Take a minimum of
twenty shots that depict the emotion you are trying to portray. Try
different poses, lighting set ups, angles, and environments.
- Choose a new subject 5 years or older.
- The subject should be the same person throughout the shoot.
- Choose two out of the ten emotions you worked on for W2A1; shoot 10 images of the first emotion and 10 images of the second.
- Depending on the 2 emotions that you choose, you may want to use a two light set-up or a three light set-up.
- Depending on the 2 emotions that you choose, you may want to use light modifiers on all of your lights or just a few.
- Be sure to keep in mind which emotion may 'call for' soft lighting and which emotion may 'call for' hard lighting.
- It
is recommended that you choose two emotions that are very different
from one another and have two different lighting schemes. For example,
if you choose "happy" and "sad" - you may want soft light to match
"happy" and hard light to match "sad".
- Use a white paper
seamless backdrop or a black paper seamless backdrop. Note: A paper
seamless backdrop is required for this assignment.
- Position your model 6 feet in front of the paper seamless backdrop.
- Arrange your 2 or 3 lights accordingly.
- Take a wide-angle photograph clearly
showing your lighting scheme, where your subject was standing, and
where the seamless paper backdrop was positioned. Students are
encouraged to use a white umbrella and/or a soft-box for this assignment
to portray a soft light. Include the wide-angle photograph in your contact sheet.
- Ensure
that all of the gear you are using is clearly displayed in the image.
If you're photographing a human model or an inanimate object, ensure
that your photo is clearly showing where your lights were in relation to
the subject. Please see the examples below:
- Use your handheld light meter to take a meter reading; bracket your shots by adjusting the aperture where necessary. Take a photograph of your handheld light meter in use in your location and include the picture in your contact sheet; similar to the image below. Please
note: If instructor is not able to read the information on the screen
of your handheld light meter, you will not receive points for using it.
Students
who are unable to meet the requirements above regarding wide-angle
lighting scheme + image of handheld light meter will run the risk of
failing the assignment.
- Prepare a contact sheet and save it as PH323_W2_A2_lastname_firstinitial_contactsheet.pdf.
- Select the best two images for peer review. Save top two images as JPEG files and label them as PH323_W2_A2_lastname_firstinitial_top image_1.jpg & PH323_W2_A2_lastname_firstinitial_top image_2.jpg.
- Make minimum
edits to your top images; limit these edits to adjusting slight
exposure settings, white balance, contrast, etc. Avoid over editing and
the appearance of a "filter" on the image.
- Create a 250-word write
up on your photographic process that clearly depicts the methodology
you were following as well as a brief statement about how these
portraits would appeal to your selected target market.
- Place both your contact sheet and two JPEG files into a folder and prepare a zip file named PH323_W2_A2_lastname_firstinitial.zip that contains your final two images, your contact sheet, and write and post it to the Discussion Area by Week 2, Day 7.
- By Week 3, Day 1, comment and provide feedback on two of your peers' photographs.
