Assignment 3: Final Project

Before moving forward with this assignment, read the post in the "Week 1 Problems and Solutions section" titled: "Sub-genres: Choose one of the following to focus on in PH323 - READ for W1A3". 

Throughout this course you will be introduced to new concepts in portraiture, innovative lighting solutions, camera techniques, dealing with client issues, and page layouts. This final project allows you to combine the techniques you have learned from the lectures and readings and produce a set of images for your own portfolio.

For the final course project, you will be choosing a particular type of portraiture photography, performing some general research on the topic, creating an artist statement, shooting a diverse body of work with a range of subjects, and defining a demographic for which you can market your photographs.

Each week you will have a different component to assemble or perform leading to a final posting of your project to your peers for critique. Remember your final project should have a diverse range of subjects. You should not photograph the same subject in more than one week. Below is a weekly breakdown of the project:

Assignment Overview
In this week's lectures, you learned about some specific genres of portraiture photography. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your understand of genres.
Assignment Description
In this assignment, you will choose a genre, perform research on three photographers and the history of the genre, write a proposal of whom and what you will photograph, and define the demographic you will market your photographs to. Think about how this genre will influence your own work, how your work will fit into this genre, and what you can do to set your work apart from the rest of the genre.

Note: You are required to choose three well known photographers to write about. This is to encourage you to conduct a bit of research in your chosen sub-genre of Portraiture.
Assignment Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Compose a 750-word document that lists the type of portraiture you have researched, a brief history of the genre, three photographers and examples of their work, a proposal for your body of work and what it will achieve, and a description of who you would market it to. Be sure to cite all sources using MLA formatting.
    1. Students are encouraged to refer to the post in the Course Home section titled "Welcome: 'Guidelines for Succeeding in Class' (Read, Download & Print - ASAP)" for details on Proper Writing Skills; details are noted in the attached PDF. 
    2. All students are reminded to consider their spelling, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and verb tense in this written assignment.  Points will be deducted for poorly written assignments.
    3. Students are encouraged to refer to the post in the Questions for the Professor section regarding MLA Citations to ensure citations are written correctly. Points will be deducted for incorrect citations.
  2. Use the following naming convention for your document: PH323_W1_A3_lastname_firstinitial_genre.doc
  3. Submit your document to the Discussion Area for facilitator review by Week 1, Day 6.
  4. By Week 1, Day 7, comment and respond on two of your peer's research papers.
