PH222: W6A1: Feedback


Hi Theresa,

You will find my feedback for your W6A1 in the form of “individual written feedback".  

RE: Submitted contact sheet with 10 images; image of wide-angle lighting scheme (showing 3-4 lights), image of handheld light meter in use, and three photoshopped portraits that depict a regular retouch, a major retouch, and an over-the-top retouch that:
  • Have correct exposure and demonstrate technical knowledge of camera and lighting control.
  • Exhibit creativity with angles and composition (moving camera and subject frequently to explore the angles).
  • Attention to line and other design elements.
  • Followed instructions and requirements for assignment.
Your assignment certainly included the basics: the new 10 head-shot images, the wide-angle image showing a  3 light set-up, and an image of the handheld light meter in use.
Your meter shows that you were measuring reflective light vs. incident light. Keep in mind: when shooting portraits, you want to meter the incident light (reflective light is great for landscapes / architecture). 
Throughout the course, I've encouraged you to place accessories on the face of your key and fill lights to soften the light along with placing a grid on the face of your background light.  Unfortunately, there was not a change made on this issue for your W6A1.
Throughout the course, I've also encouraged you to position your model 5-6 feet in front of the backdrop. As previously stated, this will help you to avoid the glare from the backdrop and to create light separation between the light falling on your subject and the light falling on the backdrop. Unfortunately, there was not a change made on this issue for your W6A1.
I thought that you chose a strong image to edit for this assignment. Each of your edits were subtle; I would have liked to see you adjust the white balance in the "over the top" image a bit further.
