Assignment 2: An Exploration of Age
Assignment Overview
Photographing subjects from various age groups takes patience, creativity, and adaptability. When you have a multitude of clients, you will have a multitude of attitudes, situations, personalities, and problems you will have to work with. Finding a solution to these multitudes is what will add to your success as a photographer.
Assignment Description
This week you discussed ¾ length portraits and several instances in which they are used as a portraiture technique. In this assignment you will be performing a ¾ length portrait in your studio for a child (or teen) and a middle-aged individual (or elderly individual). (Only photograph two different age groups; you may use a model that you have photographed in the past, however you are encouraged to shoot a new model.)
You will also be photographing your overall studio set up, the lighting equipment, stands, and the background support system using the light available.
Finally, you will create a 150-word statement describing your photographic process.
Assignment Step-by-Step Instructions
- Select your models and consider the following when you photograph each of your subjects:
- Sitting or standing?
- Pose
- Placement of hands
- Lighting
- Preplanning for cooperation of subject
- Ensure that your two models are vastly different in age to match the "content requirement" (Exploration in Age) for this assignment.
- If you have been focusing on a specific age group to meet a specific "sub-genre" of portraiture (child portraits / babies / business portraits), try to ensure that at least one of these ages is represented by your two models for this assignment.
- Set up your lights.
- Use a 3-light Set-up: a Key Light source + a Fill Light Source + a hair or background light
- Strobe Light for Key
- Strobe or 5 in 1 Reflector for Fill Light
- Strobe for hair or background light
- Do not use both a hair and a background light; choose one or the other.
- Create a 1:2 or 1:4 Ratio with Soft Lighting
- Your assignment should show an improvement from your W2A2 in terms of lighting, exposure, and use of the handheld light meter.
- With your DSLR camera, using a wide-angle lens, shoot an image of your entire setup using the available light in the studio; include this image in your contact sheet. These images will be included in your contact sheet; ensure that your image shows a clear view of where the key light (strobe w/ softbox or shoot-through umbrella) was in relation to the subject. Your image should also include your model within the shot and show where s/he was standing. Ensure that your image shows where your lights were in relation to your subject:
- Photograph your two subjects using a 3-light setup and take a minimum of 40 images (20 per subject).
- Be sure to vary your angle, framing, and composition for the best results.
- Choose the best 4 portraits, one per subject. Choose your portraits based off of composition; try to ensure that all 4 of the images look different. These will be submitted for peer review and name them using the following naming convention:
- PH222_W3_A2_lastname_firstinitial_child (or teen)_1.jpg
- PH222_W3_A2_lastname_firstinitial_child (or teen)_2.jpg
- PH222_W3_A2_lastname_firstinitial_middleaged (or elderly)_1.jpg
- PH222_W3_A2_lastname_firstinitial_middleaged (or elderly)_2.jpg
- Create a contact sheet and save the contact sheet as PH222_W3_A2_lastname_firstinitial_contactsheet.pdf.
- Create a written statement of at least 150 words that describes your photographic process including any difficulties you encountered.
- Submit the contact sheets, your studio setup, the edited images, and the written statement in a ZIP file named PH222_W3_A2_lastname_firstinitial.zip to this Discussion Area by Week 3, Day 6.
- By Week 3, Day 7 comment and respond on 2 of your peers' portraits.

- Have correct exposure and demonstrate technical knowledge of camera and lighting control.
- Exhibit creativity with angles and composition (moving camera and subject frequently to explore the angles).
- Attention to line and other design elements.
- Followed instructions and requirements for assignment.
