PH222: W3A2 - Feedback

Below you will find my feedback for your W3A2 for 2 out of the 3 categories in the rubric.  Feedback has been provided to you in the form of “group video critique". 
RE: Submitted four portraits (one of each person) using required equipment and a 3-light setup of a child (or teen), a middle-aged individual (or an elderly individual) that:
  • Have correct exposure and demonstrate technical knowledge of camera and lighting control.
  • Exhibit creativity with angles and composition (moving camera and subject frequently to explore the angles).
  • Attention to line and other design elements.
  • Followed instructions and requirements for assignment.
RE: Posted a contact sheet containing a minimum of 40 photographs made using required equipment and included a 150-word explanation about the photographic process.
I thought that your assignment showed a strong understanding of an “exploration of age” in terms of the two different subjects you photographed. I also thought your choice of composition showed a strong understanding of a ¾ length portrait.

In the future, I would encourage you to shoot more horizontal images vs. shooting all vertical images.  With that said, I think it's somewhat natural to shoot "3/4 images" as vertical shots because the human form stands up right.  Although, it's good to push your composition and get into the habit of shooting both horizontally and vertically for all of your assignments.  This will help strengthen your visual eye and compositions.

In terms of the lighting, it was a bit harsh. When you're working in a small space, you may need to turn the brightness of your lights down to compensate for your model being closer to the lights. Further details about lighting have been noted in the group video critique.
