Assignment 2: Research a Historical Element of Portraiture
*Note: Your W1A1 is due the same day.*

In this assignment you will be researching a select area of portraiture photography. Think back on the lectures and the textbook readings for this week. What areas of those readings interested you? Begin by selecting a style, genre, photographer, period, or subject and then start your research.
When performing this research, delve into the following areas:
  • When did your research topic first originate? 
    • (What year in history)
  • What were the main concepts covered?
    • (What type of light was used; focal length; typical models)
  • Who was involved in it?
  • Where did it take place?
  • How long did it occur?
You are also permitted to touch on other topics aside from the ones mentioned in the questions above in order to strengthen your essay.


Note 1: Students are encouraged to refer to the weekly readings from the required textbook, Faces for this assignment in order to learn more about the history of portraiture.  (Readings for Week 1 are noted in the "Reading & Assignments" section of the classroom.) Student are also encouraged to visit the Online Library through the Student Commons; conduct word searches that will yield reliable resources for this essay.

Note 2: Students are required to write his/her essay using proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.  Poorly written essays will not be accepted.  It is suggested that students type his/her assignment in a Microsoft Word document and utilize the spelling/grammar tools to double check his/her work.  Students are also encouraged to submit his/her essay to Grammarly.com alongside the tools offered in Word; click on the link below to learn more:

Note 3: Students are required to cite at least three sources for his/her essay; citations should be written using the MLA format.  Students are required to use at least one section from the Week 1 module, 1 section from PH222's required textbook, and 1 outside resource from Online Library or local library.

Note 4: Plagiarism will result in a failing grade.  Avoid copying information directly from resources or from classmates' papers that may have been uploaded prior to your assignment.

By Week 1, Day 4, submit a 750-word document to the Discussion Area that covers the above questions and at least 5 specific photographic examples of your topic. Be sure to cite all of your sources using the proper MLA-formatting techniques. Name and save the document as PH222_W1_A2_lastname_firstname.doc.
By Week 1, Day 6, comment and respond on 2 of your peers' research papers.
